In the German town of Stadtallendorf, a fire station was completely destroyed by a fire. The fire was able to spread unchecked because part of the station—which had only opened in January—did not have a sprinkler system or fire alarm. The damage is estimated at at least 20 million euros.
The fire broke out shortly after 4:00 a.m. One of the vehicles may have caught fire, according to the regional broadcaster Hessenschau. Local authorities reported that there were no fire alarms or sprinklers in the section of the station where the fire started.
At least twelve fire trucks were engulfed in flames. Although the fire department (naturally) arrived on the scene quickly, the fire spread rapidly and caused extensive damage.
Stadtallendorf is located in the German state of Hesse, where smoke detectors are only required in areas such as bedrooms, living rooms, and hallways of apartment complexes. Municipalities decide for themselves whether fire stations and other public buildings are equipped with smoke detectors.
“This fire will likely give people pause for thought,” a researcher from the local fire department told Hessenschau. The damage to the building is estimated at 20 to 24 million euros. The mayor has announced that the new fire station will indeed be equipped with smoke detectors.
This incident once again underscores the importance of properly functioning fire safety systems—even in buildings where firefighting is the core of the organization.
