Insight into the dynamic behavior of a structure
Not all defects are visible when a mast is stationary. For taller masts and traffic control systems, dynamic forces—such as wind loads and vibrations—also play a significant role. To properly assess the structural condition, additional testing is therefore sometimes necessary.
Normec typically uses dynamic 3D rotation measurement in combination with a static 3D measurement. This measurement method is particularly suitable for masts between 14 and 50 meters in height and for traffic control systems (TCS).
Measuring how an object responds to loads
During the measurement, our specialists set the object in motion in a controlled manner. Using a counterweight drum, an increasing rotational force is generated, while an advanced 3D camera precisely records how the structure responds.
Among other things, we measure:
- The natural frequency of the object
- The rate at which the object deviates from its natural frequency
- The structure’s response to dynamic loading
- The structural condition of the entire object
During the measurement, the frequency range from 0 to 5 hertz is scanned. The counterweight rotates at up to 300 revolutions per minute.
A valuable complement to static measurements
While a static 3D measurement provides insight into the stability of a mast, a dynamic 3D rotational measurement shows how the structure behaves under moving loads. Combining both measurement methods provides a more complete picture of the structure’s technical condition.
This enables managers to make more informed decisions regarding maintenance, repair, or replacement.
Reliable Results
The measurement data is carefully analyzed to determine whether the structure, including all connected components, is still functioning safely and reliably.
The results help with, among other things:
- Assessing structural safety
- Planning maintenance
- Justifying replacement decisions
- Minimizing unexpected outages
- Extending the service life of structures
For approved structures, a safety certificate may be issued with a validity period of up to five years.
