Smoke Control in the Event of a Fire

In the event of a fire, it is not only the flames that pose a danger. Smoke, in particular, can have serious consequences. It limits visibility, makes breathing difficult, and can lead to suffocation or smoke inhalation. A smoke control system exhausts hot smoke and combustion gases to the outside. This ensures that conditions inside the building remain suitable for safe evacuation for a longer period of time.

The Building and Living Environment Decree (Bbl) contains the national regulations for the fire-safe use of buildings. In certain situations, a smoke control system with an inspection certificate can be used to meet these requirements.

When is an inspection required?

Are you using a smoke control system as an equivalent solution to a requirement in the building regulations? If so, it must have an inspection certificate in accordance with the CCV inspection schedule.

You can also have an inspection performed even if it is not mandatory. For example, to verify that the system was installed correctly, to assess its current condition with a baseline inspection, or to obtain an independent second opinion. This way, you’ll know exactly where you stand and whether the system meets the established criteria.

How we inspect your system

Does your smoke control system exhaust smoke and heat as intended? We assess this during our inspection. We verify whether the system meets the established derived objective. This objective must be traceable to the basic design, such as the Statement of Requirements (SOR).

Our inspectors examine the system and test the associated control systems. In addition, we assess structural provisions and organizational measures, such as system management and the storage of materials. The exact checkpoints are listed in the CCV inspection schedule. We can also inspect whether the system complies with the applicable standard or the guiding document.

What are the benefits of an inspection?

  • You gain insight into how your smoke control system operates
  • You’ll know whether the inspected components are functioning in accordance with the guidelines
  • You’ll gain clarity on the structural and organizational provisions
  • You’ll have an expert assessment of your system
  • If the assessment is positive, you’ll receive an inspection certificate

Smoke Control Inspection Certificate

An inspection certificate demonstrates that the assessed fire protection system meets the required standards. During the inspection, we examine the technical installation, structural provisions, and organizational measures. Are all components in order? If so, you’ll receive an inspection certificate from Normec. Among other things, this allows you to demonstrate to your insurer that your fire protection system meets the relevant requirements.

Why choose Normec?

Our inspectors combine years of experience with specialized knowledge. Each has their own area of expertise and broad professional knowledge. This allows us to assess your smoke control system carefully and independently. Normec is ISO 17020-accredited. This ensures the quality and independence of our inspections.

Periodic Reinspection

Even after the initial inspection, your smoke control system must continue to function as intended. That is why a periodic re-inspection is conducted. We verify that the system is being properly maintained and that it still meets its original objectives. The inspection takes place annually, unless different requirements apply to the building or structure in question. This allows you to monitor the condition of your system and ensures that fire safety remains verifiable.

Frequently Asked Questions About Smoke Control System Inspections
