New Developments at the AREI

5 April 2023

Changes have been made to the three volumes of the General Regulations on Electrical Installations (AREI).

For Book 1, the safety measures for residential installations have been amended, including, for example, the definition of a residential installation, diagrams, plans, and documents; protection against electric shock from indirect contact; and special provisions for existing installations, etc.

From now on, the common areas of a residential complex (hallways, stairwells, etc.) are considered non-residential installations, provided that certain safety measures applicable to residential installations are implemented.

Other changes in Book 1 concern the wording of certain texts and terms.

For Books 2 and 3, the changes mainly concern the wording of certain texts and terms.

This new amendment was published in the Belgian Official Gazette on March 28, 2023, and takes effect on June 1, 2023.

The updated Books 1, 2, and 3, along with a list of amendments, are available on the FPS Economy website.

Emergency Lighting Inspection: When Is It Required in Belgium?

When a building is suddenly plunged into darkness—due to a fire, power outage, or other malfunction—emergency lighting is often the only system left to provide guidance. Yet in practice, we find that organizations in Belgium often overlook the inspection of emergency lighting. Implementation is particularly behind schedule in Wallonia. Yet various regulations explicitly require this inspection, such as the Walloon Tourism Handbook. This creates a risk for many organizations. Changes to AREI 2026
