Making sports facilities more sustainable has been a top priority for some time now. Sustainable investments in energy efficiency, circularity, or climate adaptation are therefore being encouraged in various ways. Examples include purchasing heat pumps, installing solar panels, or, of course, switching to LED sports field lighting. Switching to LED lighting requires a significant investment, but subsidy programs can lower that barrier. In this article, we’d like to tell you more about the options available.
Does your municipality own one or more sports facilities? If so, you can apply for the SPUK program (Specific Grant for Sports Promotion). Through this grant program, the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport encourages municipalities to continue investing in the construction and maintenance of sports parks. The government subsidizes 17.5% of the costs incurred for this purpose.

Is the maintenance of the sports complex the responsibility of the club itself? If so, you can inform the club about the BOSA scheme. BOSA stands for “Incentive for the Construction and Maintenance of Sports Facilities” and is intended to encourage clubs to make their own investments. Under this program, sports clubs can receive a subsidy covering up to 30% of the costs for sustainable investments.

What makes these subsidy programs particularly attractive is that you can recover not only the costs of making your sports field lighting more sustainable but also the associated services. Consider, for example, a stability assessment of the existing light poles. This assessment provides insight into the quality, condition, and stability of the light poles. It clarifies whether they provide a sturdy foundation for the LED fixtures. Are the light poles still in good condition? If so, you’ll only need to invest in LED lighting—not in new poles as well. The costs for such a stability assessment can be included in the subsidy application and thus reimbursed.
If you engage Normec Rei-Lux to assess the sports light poles, we will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the entire pole using a static measurement and a dynamic 3D rotational measurement. If we approve a light pole after the measurement, you’ll receive a warranty certificate valid for up to 5 years. In addition, depending on the condition of the light pole and the measurement results, we provide a projected service life of up to 15 years. This way, you won’t have to replace poles that are still in good condition and structurally sound unnecessarily. We then perform a strength calculation to determine whether the poles are sufficiently dimensioned to support the LED lighting you have specified.
