The Role of Balusters in Public Safety
However, defects in these structures can unfortunately have serious consequences, as was evident in 2006 when a wharf staircase collapsed during a musical event in Utrecht. Prior to this accident, it was standard practice to conduct visual inspections of the staircases along the canals twice a year. In hindsight, it became clear that a visual inspection alone is not sufficient to guarantee safety in public spaces.
Are defects visible?
Defects in the material, rust spots, or warping are visible signs that something might be wrong. However, a visual inspection alone is by no means sufficient. Weak spots may be hidden beneath a layer of paint or underground, meaning they are not necessarily visible to the naked eye. Not to mention that this method does not allow you to assess the stability of the structures.
Our 3D stability assessment addresses this need and provides you with insight into the condition, state of maintenance, and stability of each object measured. Any defects are identified at an early stage. The results are documented in detail in a report. This enables you to take measures for each structure as needed, thereby ensuring maximum safety in public spaces.
The Importance of Measurement
The age-old saying, “To measure is to know; to guess is to miss,” applies here as well. Only after a measurement by Normec Rei-Lux can the condition, state of maintenance, and stability of these structures be determined. Using equipment and software specially developed for this purpose, we measure the stability of balusters, bridge railings, and fences.
